The ninth Grand Prix Casalgrande Padana has come to an end: on Saturday 11th May 2013, in the charming Spazio CityLife in Milan, the winning projects received their prizes in front of the awarded designers. Guest of honour of the Milanese event was architect Daniel Libeskind, who, in keeping with the ceremony, held a lectio magistralis and presented a selection of his projects, including Residenze CityLife, where over 50,000 square metres of Casalgrande Padana’s external facings have been used. Issue no. 27 of “Percorsi in Ceramica” is all about this important event for the building world in which ceramics are the real hero. First held in 1990, the Grand Prix is an international architecture award open to projects completed all over the world that, each one in its area, have managed to enhance Casalgrande Padana’s porcelain stoneware materials, turning them into the key features of the architectural, technological and functional quality of the project. In this scenario, the Milanese event was also an opportunity to take stock of a cultural initiative that has grown and developed over time, becoming an industry landmark. Since the Nineties, ceramic materials and especially porcelain stoneware have evolved in terms of aesthetics and performance, and have made a comeback in the building industry. This is proven by the history of the Grand Prix, which year after year has seen the use of such products grow, little by little, in projects of outstanding architectural interest, while branching off into different areas, techniques and expressive methods through the designers’ work. This trend is perfectly confirmed by the high quality standards of the projects entered in 2010-2012. “Percorsi in Ceramica” will end with a short summary of the lecture held by Libeskind on the occasion and brief description of some his projects: Jewish Museum- Berlin; Ground Zero - New york; CityLife - Milan.
