Mathematics may be an exact science, still in architecture 5+1 makes 3. Of course we are talking about Agenzia 5+1AA, led by Alfonso Femia, Gianluca Peluffo and Simonetta Cenci, who became partner in 2006. The firm was established in 1995 and in less than 20 years of professional practice it developed hundreds of projects, of which over 40 saw the light either in Italy or abroad. Their craft is based on contents; it is neither repetitive nor indifferent to the context. For every building, it claims the role of public responsibility of which it is bringer. Their projects are based on their ability to listen to and read the context. As Femia himself said during the interview published in these pages: “We cannot but believe in dialogue as a tool for the project and the project as a tool for dialogue”. In a nutshell, this is the approach of those who do not impose their solutions from above but rather silently immerse in reality to get to the bottom of problems. This attitude does not change according to the scale of the project, nor before its procedural complexity (e.g. technology), which 5+1AA tackle with prowess and skill. Their recent projects, published in this issue, are about this and a lot more. Their architecture, like many other projects still under development, are closely bound with the research and collaboration project started a few years ago with Casalgrande Padana. This technology and conceptual challenge aims at developing a new generation of porcelain stoneware ceramic elements that, by way of their threedimensionality, make it possible to design articulate and dynamic surfaces under the effect of the incident light. This is yet another significant step taken by the company along the path to which it has always been committed next to the international architect community, with the aim of matching project and production with a positive and proactive attitude. The second part of the magazine is devoted to production, with three new features launched at the latest Cersaie edition: the development and extension of Linea Granitoker with the Cemento and Tavolato series and the Spazio series in Linea Pietre Native, three latest-generation ceramic projects specifically though for architecture and design, which stem from the massive research and development efforts that embody the Casalgrande Padana way of working.
